BTL consists of allied mental health professionals who are well-trained to support the unique needs of first responders. Through mental health check-ups, crisis management, ongoing therapeutic services, and peer support, BTL aims to decrease risk factors (e.g., substance abuse, marital & financial problems, physical illness, mental health needs) that often lead to burn-out, poor job performance, risky behavior, and even suicide. BTL also aims to increase protective factors (e.g., peer support, therapeutic support, psychoeducation) to better first responders' performance while promoting retention and longevity in the field. BTL is a recognized organization that provides therapy dogs dedicated to helping our first responders, military veterans, and any other agency that may need extra support or has experienced a critical event. The dogs and their handlers go through three obedience courses and must complete a test to be recognized as a certified therapy team. At this time, there are three certified teams and one in training. The teams have attended first responder funerals, vigils, organizations, training, and outreach events.
