Crisfield & Smith Island Cultural Alliance, Inc.

About this Organization

This organization currently oversees a small archival collection of artifacts and documents dating back to the pre-1800s. Our Smith Island Cultural Center site houses this collection and a seasonally operating museum dedicated to the culture, history, geography, and linguistics of a small "true" island in the Chesapeake Bay, Smith Island, that was first settled in 1608. This museum is a marvelous gem that packs an extensive amount of information into a small, two room exhibition space. It also features a rotating cast of workers who excited to answer questions about the island and it's history or assist with historical or genealogical research.

We are also dedicated to being environmental stewards of the land we operate on and acknowledge the First Peoples who settled this land before us. This includes the installation of a brand new, 95% Maryland native butterfly garden; an exhibition of the artifacts of First Peoples found on our island's shores; and a dedicated, ADA-accessible nature walk, featuring our tidal salt-marsh ecosystem.

This program is one of a kind in that no other museum on the Eastern Shore of Maryland is dedicated uniquely to the history of Smith Island and it has preserved countless precious artifacts, photos, and documents. It's cultural value simply cannot be measured in numbers or words.
