Society of St. Andrew - Delmarva

About this Organization

In the United States, 40% of all food goes to waste. Yet, every day, millions of people struggle to eat 3 meals. When they do have food, it's often not the healthiest of options. Society of St. Andrew addresses both of those issues. We deliver millions of servings of food nationally each year at a cost of $0.09/pound. We locate farms that have surplus food that is good to eat and we redistribute it to agencies and families in need. Our largest expenses are packaging materials to put the food into and the transportation costs needed to get the food from where it is grown to where families are that need it the most. Nationally, Society of St. Andrew distributes about 30million pounds of produce each year. Our newest office, on the Delmarva peninsula, opened in June 2022, and has already distributed nearly 3 million pounds of food in its first two years, all going to local hunger agencies and underserved communities. Farmers benefit, knowing their good food doesn't go to waste, as well as receiving a Maryland tax credit for donated produce; volunteers benefit by seeing the tangible, and literal, "fruits of their labor;" and agencies benefit by receiving fresh, nutritious produce absolutely free, allowing them to spend scarce dollars on other program needs. And most importantly, our most vulnerable neighbors benefit by adding good food to their diets that they would not have access to otherwise.
