Friends of Poplar Hill Mansion

About this Organization

As the City of Salisbury's oldest house, first hospital, and only historic house museum, we are tasked with interpreting the rich history of, not only Poplar Hill Mansion, but also the City herself, which was partly built on land that once belonged to the farm. We interpret the time period of 1805-1830, but we also have information pertaining to and connections to the founding of Salisbury in 1732, the establishment of Salisbury as a major port city and milling city along the Wicomico River, the establishment of Salisbury becoming a leader in medicine with the top medical staff, the African-American experience in Salisbury from slavery to prominence, the Civil War era in Salisbury, the great Fire of 1886, the establishment of Salisbury's first suburb and eventually the urbanization of Salisbury, and present day Salisbury. We offer tours of the house every Sunday from 12:00-4:00 and by appointment. We also do school tours and are willing to provide an in-classroom experience for local schools. We also work with bus groups and tour companies, clubs, and other organizations to arrange tours, lectures, and special programming. We offer a wide variety of public programming such as teas, concerts, holiday open houses, and an annual festival centered around the Federal time period. We are always looking to improve and expand our programming and guest experience. We serve over 2,000 guests every year and as heritage tourism becomes the fastest growing part of the tourism industry, we want to be able to preserve the house and its furnishings for more people to enjoy in the years ahead. We were the 2018 recipient of the Heritage Interpretation Award from the Bay to Beach Heritage Area for our Dr. Huston Surgery Room exhibit and the recipient of the 2019 Best Heritage Initiative Award from the Bay to Beach Heritage Area for the Poplar Hill Mansion Festival: Celebrating Over 200 Years of Salisbury History, as well as being named the 2024 Best Museum in Wicomico County by Coastal Style Magazine.
