Project Linus of Lower DelMarVa

About this Organization

As our mission statement describes we have two functions. The blankets we make are all given to children in crisis. We have given nearly 16,000 blankets to children in 21 years. Most of these blankets have been for local children. A few times we have sent blankets to help during natural disasters, particularly hurricanes. After Hurricane Sandy, chapters from all over the US sent blankets here so I could distribute them at Woodson Elementary School, where we gave 600 to the children of Crisfield. The blankets are most often given to hospitals, foster care agencies, CASA, Cricket Center, homeless shelters, pregnancy centers and other places where children are helped through a crisis. The other part of our work involves the volunteers who make the blankets. Most of them are crafted by talented ladies who sew and crochet. Most of them are 60 years and older. The making and the giving enrich their lives as they can make something to show their love for children they don't even know! They have a sense of purpose and belonging to something very positive in their community. We also see student groups like scouts, 4H, high school kids earning their service learning credits and Christian schools teaching students about giving. The impact is not measurable but we hear from nurses and child life coordinators that the blankets help them through difficult days and the children relax and light up when they get a special blanket to keep. Recently the medical center on Tangier Island reported that they sent a blanket with a child being helicoptered to a major medical center, and Dorchester General reported the same sort of story to me last week. We hear positive things about blankets being given to every foster child in the 3 lower counties and what it means to a child who owns so little of their very own.
