Wicomico Environmental Trust

About this Organization

WET was founded in 1989 by a small group concerned about the county's environmental policies (or lack thereof). During WET's first five years, its principal efforts were directed at public education about environmental issues. In 2005, the Board of Directors secured IRS nonprofit status and focused on the rapidly increasing county sprawl development. In 2011, water quality and the health of the Wicomico River and its watershed were added to WET's mission. WET worked with government and other NGOs to develop a watershed management plan for the Wicomico River. In 2016, WET stepped into the lead position of volunteer coordination, outreach, communication, and funding for the Wicomico Creekwatchers program. In recent years, WET's advocacy has included active engagement with issues related to waste management, clean energy, clean water, wastewater treatment, public health risks, and environmental equity. WET's flagship initiative is the Wicomico Creekwatchers Program, a joint venture of the Wicomico Environmental Trust and Salisbury University's Henson School of Science, with critical support from the city of Salisbury, the Chesapeake Bay Trust, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The Creekwatcher program has been monitoring water quality throughout Wicomico County for more than two decades. Volunteer citizen-scientists collect water samples at 26 sites biweekly from March to November, and volunteer science faculty and students at Salisbury University analyze the samples for a number of analytes in addition to bacteria levels. After the sampling season, the data recorded over the entire season are analyzed and the results published in an annual scorecard documenting trends affecting the river's health. The Wicomico River Creekwatchers program aims to be an integral part of the restoration of the Wicomico River by providing credible, scientific data on its condition, educating and engaging the public in the importance of its scientific study and stewardship, and providing a range of opportunities for student and citizen participation.
